Synopsis

In 2002, on holiday to the village where my mother was born, I fell in love. But our love can never be, for the girl is a descendant of my grandparents’ slaves. I am a noble “Marabout”, from the highest echelons of the Soninke: a hierarchical, pro-slavery society in which inequality is rife. Despite this, in August 2007, the Mauritanian government passed a law that made slave trading—already abolished in 1960 and 1981—a criminal offense.
